the film <out at work> chronicles the stories of three grassroot “lgbt” (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) workers during the 90’s: a cook in a chain restaurant, an electrician at an automobile manufacturer and a public library clerk.
the documentary records their family lives and also their working experiences for over 5 years. facing discrimination on the ground of sexual orientation and gender identity, they need to struggle with unfriendly and homophobic co-workers as well as working environment.
with the aims of workplace safety, job security and employee partner benefits, <out at work> not only records their collective fight with peers and straight co-workers, but also raises the critical issues of legislating against discrimination and the role of labour unions and movements. different from the mainstream gay-images presented in the mass media, this documentary shows us the diversity of grassroot “lgbt” and let us draw an interesting comparison between the america 15-year-ago and hong kong nowadays.
